World Heritage Sites play a significant part as major sources for cultural and social sustainable development. World Heritage Site statuses are designated by UNESCO considering their cultural, historical, scientific and other kinds of significance. This 2023 came with amazing news from UNESCO when 4 of Rwandan genocide memorial sites and Nyungwe Forest National Park were all recognized as World Heritage Sites.
Recognizing the 5 sites meant increase in their international visibility and specifically, to the genocide memorials, it is great honor of those who were victims. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization- UNESCO disclosed this amazing news on Wednesday September 20th 2023. The designation was disclosed during the UNESCO session in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
4 memorial sites of the 1994 Rwandan genocide were inscribed as World Heritage Sites including Gisozi, Murambi, Nyamata and Bisesero.
The four memorials are among the numerous genocide sites were victims of the Rwanda genocide were laid to rest. About 800,000 people largely the Tutsi lost their lives as a result of this horrible genocide. Kigali memorial site is found in Kigali capital, Murambi memorial is found in the Southern Rwanda, Bisesero is located in Western Rwanda and in the Eastern province, there is Nyamata memorial center.
Each of the Rwanda memorial sites have unique traits and depict the cruelty with which the victims suffered when they were ruthlessly massacred. At Kigali or Gisozi memorial, about 250,000 victims were laid to rest. It is also one of the most visited sites by guests on Kigali city tour.
In the Eastern Province, Nyamata memorial is the place to consider a must-visit and now an inscribed UNESCO Site. Over 45,000 victims of the 1994 Rwandan genocide were laid to rest in this site. They sought refuge at the site but unfortunately, they were massacred in just one day. Bisesero is where victims (Tutsis) tried to resist against the perpetrators using traditional weapons like machetes, spears and sticks.
Nyungwe in the Southern Province of Rwanda is now among the few national parks in Africa that has been inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It becomes Rwanda’s first site to be on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Nyungwe National Park was founded in 2004, and expands up to 970sq.km, protecting diversity of floral and faunal species. These include 310 species of birds, 300 butterfly species, 13 primate species and others.
The numerous primates to encounter in Nyungwe Forest include the grey-cheeked mangabeys, olive baboons, blue monkeys, golden monkeys, l’hoest monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, owl-faced monkeys, golden monkeys, Dent’s Mona monkeys, more than 500 chimpanzees and many more.
The exciting experiences to enjoy while in Nyungwe National Park include; Chimpanzee tracking, the most famous primate adventure that allows you to enjoy up close and personal with a habituated chimpanzee community. This is done starting from Uwinka or Cyamudongo forest, a section of Nyungwe spanning 19sq.km.
Canopy walk –this is East Africa’s 1st experience and Nyungwe is where you can have the best of this experience. It involves navigating through a suspended walkway set 50 meters from the ground and stretching 200 meters.
Birding –a total of 310 species survive within Nyungwe Forest National Park. These include endemic species of totaling up to 27, and resident species. The different birds to identify here include Rockefeller’s sunbird, Albertine owlet, red-collared babblers, handsome spur fowl, yellow-billed duck, spur winged goose, afep pigeon, speckled pigeon, scaly spur fowl, African black duck, Blue headed coucal, great blue turacos, Rwenzori turacos, Ross’s turacos, blue malkoha, white-browed coucal, bared long-tailed cuckoos, red-chested cuckoos, Klaas’s cuckoos, Dideric cuckoos, African emerald cuckoos, African palm swift, Horus swift, Square-tailed nightjars, montane nightjars, yellow-billed storks, African open bill, gray crowned cranes, black headed heron, purple herons, squacco heron, black crowned night heron, and many others.
Besides the five newly designated UNESCO Sites, you can also visit other sites like Volcanoes National Park for gorilla trekking, golden monkey tracking, volcano hiking (Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura), Lake Kivu –ideal for beach relaxation, boat rides; Akagera National Park- get to see all the big 5 game in a single habitat, etc.
