With just 2 Days, you can have the best of Nyungwe canopy walk and chimpanzee trekking experience. Nyungwe Forest National Park – NFNP is Rwanda’s 2nd biggest park and also the country’s largest natural forest-dominated protected area. The park was created in 2004 and lies in the far Southwestern edge of Rwanda, about 6 hours’ drive from the heart of Kigali.
Nyungwe Forest National Park occupies over 970sq.km and comprises of grasslands, bogs, bamboo forest and afro-montane forest. The park is sitting on elevation range of about 3000m and extends towards the Rwanda border with Burundi, Lake Kivu and Congo. It protects over 13 primate species (including silver monkeys, 500 chimps, Angola colobus monkeys, old baboons, Dent’s Mona monkeys, Red-tailed monkeys, Grey-cheeked mangabeys and others), 20 reptile species, and 310 species of birds.
The chimpanzee trek is done along Uwinka and Cyamudongo sectors, and canopy walk at Igishigishigi trail in Uwinka sector. The park is also popular for birding safaris, and hiking/forest walking tours.

Leave your hotel facility on a 6-hour drive Southwards navigating via Butare on a scenic view of the countryside's unique landscape. Briefly, branch off and visit the Nyanza king’s palace or ethnographic museum. Connect from Huye straight to the lodge for lunch in the afternoon, relax and join others on a guided canopy walk starting from the Uwinka Visitor Centre. The 2 hours canopy walk comes with amazing sights of baboons, colobus monkeys, scenic canopy cover and more. After the thrilling experience on a suspended bridge walkway, return to the lodge for relaxation, dinner and a night stay.
Accommodation
It is D-day to enjoy up close and personal with chimpanzees in the wild. You will be expected to wake as early as 4:00 am to prepare for your chimpanzee trek in Cyamudongo forest section or Uwinka. Briefing will be done by the park official and you will be allocated the park guide.
The park guide will allow you to stay with chimps for one hour once you have located them in the wild. Use this time to also take as many photos as you can then begin hiking back to the lodge. Relax a little, enjoy an early lunch and check out ready to be transferred back to Kigali –drop off at the hotel or airport.
