Bwindi Impenetrable National Park has recorded additional habituated gorilla families for tourists on Uganda gorilla safaris to explore. The new gorilla groups were officially opened for gorilla trekking in Bwindi by Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). About 5 new gorilla groups were unveiled for gorilla trekking adventure in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest Park. They are distributed in the different sectors including Buhoma, Rushaga and Nkuringo.
UWA officially announced introduction of these gorilla groups on 17th January 2024 and it marked the end of their habituation process. The new gorilla groups were monitored by the team of trackers and researchers for a period of about 4 years. They include Posho gorilla family in Nkuringo region; Rwigi and Tindatine group in Rushaga while Muyambi and Bunyindo gorilla group are in Buhoma sector.
The unveiled gorilla groups promise a distinct and enriching gorilla trekking experience in Bwindi. Their introduction means a great chance for primate enthusiasts to explore more about their interesting daily behaviors and also taking pictures of these rare apes while in their natural habitats.
The current expansion in the gorilla groups comes with increase in the gorilla permits hence more opportunities for most trekkers to realize their dream. With this addition, the total of gorilla permits in Uganda currently stands at 194 –available for normal gorilla trekking experiences and 4 permits are available for visitors interested in gorilla habituation experience.
Rushaga sector in the Southern part of Bwindi features 2 new habituated mountain gorillas and include Rwigi and Tindatine groups.
Rwigi gorilla group –This is one of the newly habituated gorilla family also open for gorilla trekking in the Rushaga region in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Rwigi left Kahungye gorilla group under the leadership of Rwigi silverback gorilla. The group has a composition of 6 members and a visit to interact with this family, guarantees you a life changing experience.
Tindatine gorilla group – this new gorilla family split off from the Nshongi group in Rushaga.
Muyambi gorilla group –this family of mountain gorillas comprises of 8 individuals and they fall under the leadership of Muyambi silverback gorilla. This group was originally part of the Mubare gorilla family and broke off in 2019.
Bunyindo –the Bunyindo group is headed by Bunyindo silverback in Buhoma sector, the Northern section of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
In the Southern side of Bwindi particularly in Nkuringo region, there is Posho group a gorilla led by Magara silverback gorilla. It has a composition of 14 members including adult females, black backs, infants and juveniles.
Ruhija sector –this is located in the Eastern part of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest Park and as per 2024, there are no new groups UWA launched in this region. Its original groups still include Bitukura gorilla family with 13 individuals, Oruzogo gorilla group with 19 members, Mukiza gorilla group consisting of 12 individuals, and Kyaguriro group lead by Rukara silverback gorilla.
This sector together with Nkuringo are found in the Southern side of Bwindi. Rushaga has the highest concentration of habituated gorilla families in Bwindi compared to any region. With an addition of 2 new gorilla groups, the sector now boasts of 11 gorilla families. The old groups in Rushaga include Mishaya, Nshongi, Mucunguzi, Kutu, Busingye, Bikingi, Bweza, Kahungye, and more.
Buhoma region has original gorilla groups like Habinyanja, Rushegura, Katwe and Mubare group. With an addition of Muyambi and Bunyindo, the sector now welcomes a significant number of visitors unlike before.
In Nkuringo, the groups to visit inclusive of new ones include Bushaho, Nkuringo group, and Christmas and Posho family.
Away from the newly introduced groups, Uganda Wildlife Authority has also made adjustment in its gorilla permit fees and other conservation tariffs. In case your plan is to visit the iconic gorilla permits in Bwindi or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, the permits can be obtained at USD 800 per person. The new fee is effective July 1st 2024 till 2026.
During the new gorilla permit price increment, other key tariffs affected include Kibale chimpanzee permits to be issued at USD 250, Kyambura Gorge permits USD 100 and chimpanzee habituation in Kibale –permits cost USD 300 per person.
