By a mere mention about Rwanda, gorilla trekking is the first thing that often comes to the minds of many. But one may also ask if he or she can have gorilla habituation experience in Rwanda. Well, currently, Rwanda doesn’t offer mountain gorilla habituation experience in Volcanoes National Park.
Mountain gorilla habituation experience is only done while in Rushaga sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park at USD 1500 per gorilla permit per person. Gorilla habituation is basically a long process in which wild/semi-habituated gorilla families are trained by researchers or trackers/even team of conservationists in order to make them get used to the human presence. This exercise takes sometime about 2 year or more depending on how quick the family of these apes can adapt to human presence.
Habituation of gorillas cuts across all gorilla parks. In Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, most gorilla families are fully habituated and the rest have been put aside purposely for research. The primarily experience awaiting you on Rwanda safaris in Volcanoes NP is gorilla trekking.
Trekking with Rwanda gorillas in Volcanoes N/Park is done in any of the 12 habituated gorilla groups. The gorilla families in this park include Sabyinyo, Umubano, Agashya, Amahoro, Susa, Susa B or Karisimbi, Kwitonda, and more. It is possible to combine normal gorilla trekking safaris in Volcanoes National Park and gorilla habituation experience in Bwindi National Park.
