Gorillas in Rwanda and Uganda can be visited at any time of the day, month or year. But the best time for you to travel and enjoy up close and personal with these large apes in their natural habitat is during the dry season. The two destinations experience two dry season, the first phase (also known as the longest dry season) starts from June, July, August, to September and short drier months are: December, January and February.
Visiting gorillas during the dry season guarantees amazing gorilla treks because it is easier trekking through the steep slopes and jungles while searching for the gorilla family assigned to you. There is minimal or completely no rain experienced during the dry season and the ground remains drier unlike the wet season.
The wet or rainy season is an important season of the year when it comes to gorilla trekking, especially for backpackers or budget travelers. The wet or rainy months in Uganda and Rwanda start around March, April, May and October to November of every year. The wet or rainy months are known to experience heavy rains, thus supporting high-growth rate of plants that make up the largest portion of gorilla diet.
Availability of abundant plant life means, gorillas have plenty to feed on and they keep around their home range unlike the dry season. The disadvantage though is that the steep slopes often become slippery and ground muddy which pause huge challenge for trekkers to navigate through the forest to see gorillas.
Knowing the right items to pack for gorilla trekking is key for anyone planning to visit Uganda or Rwanda for gorilla tours.
