Get to know all the latest updates about gorilla trekking permit rates for 2024/2026 in Uganda. After every 2 years, Uganda through its park authority –Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) reviews its conservation tariffs and gorilla permit fees are among the key areas where changes have been made.
This article encompasses the updated Uganda gorilla trekking permit rates for 2024-2026. With the current changes made by UWA, anyone intending to visit the country’s iconic attractions –mountain gorillas will obtain a valid gorilla permit at USD 800. The authorities have increased the normal rates of gorilla permits from USD700 to USD800 per person.
The new gorilla trekking permit prices are effective from July 1st 2024. This also means that for all purchases of gorilla permits made for any treks intended to begin 1st July 2024, the new rates do apply. The new tariff affects those who made deposits based on the old rates will be required to make a top up to sum the amount to USD 800.
Visitors who made full payment of gorilla permits using the old prices and their treks intend to begin from July onwards, do not need to make an additional pay of USD 100. It should be noted that the USD 800 applies to foreign non-residents, while the foreign residents USD 700 and East African Community citizens Ugandans inclusive now pay Shs. 300,000 per person.
UWA has also introduced the new charge for all Africans who aren’t East African citizens and they intend to be part of the exhilarating gorilla experience in Uganda. This means such category of trekkers pay USD 500 per person. The normal gorilla trekking permit comes with remarkable benefit where visitors are guaranteed a maximum interaction of an hour with a family of endangered mountain gorillas in the wild.
The gorilla habituation experience fees have not been changed as per the current updates. This means the previous rates still apply where the foreign non-residents pay USD 1500 per person, the foreign residents USD 1000 and East African Community citizens (Ugandans inclusive) pay shs. 750,000 per person. Note, gorilla habituation experience is unique in the sense that it allows you enjoy a complete 4 hours with a family of endangered mountain gorillas in the wild.
Every single gorilla permit in Uganda allows you to trek or interact with only one gorilla family group per day. On actual visit to see gorillas in the wild, you are accompanied by an experienced park guide.
According to authorities, the increase in the gorilla permit fees are intended to generate more finances that will help in gorilla conservation and habitat protection. The finances generated are also aimed at boosting the local community initiatives and others.
The old rates (USD 700 per visitor) still apply from now till June 2024. You can take advantage of this opportunity and be part of the unforgettable gorilla trekking adventure in Uganda.
All gorilla safaris in Uganda are enjoyable from the 2 parks –Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. The 2 Uganda gorilla safari parks all lie in the far Southwestern part of the country and they offer refuge to about half of the world’s remaining 1063 endangered mountain gorillas.
Visitors can trek any of the 21 habituated gorilla groups in Uganda and each family is visited each day by a maximum of 8 guests. The briefing and allocation of park gorilla groups plus guides are all done at the respective park offices.
Bwindi National Park is a 331sq.km rainforest park and comprises of 4 regions each with a significant distribution of gorilla families. The four regions include Buhoma, Nkuringo, Rushaga and Ruhija. The various gorilla families in Bwindi include among others Mishaya, Kutu, Bweza, Nshongi, Mucunguzi, Kahungye, Bikingi, Busingye, Rwigi –all available in Rushaga region,
Mubare, Katwe, Habinyanja, Rushegura in Buhoma region, Oruzogo family, Mukiza, Bitukura and Kyaguriro group in Ruhija while in Nkuringo, the present groups include Nkuringo, Christmas, Posho and Bushaho gorilla group families.
Mgahinga National Park gorilla tours involve visit to Nyakagezi group –the only habituated gorilla group in this protected area. This is also the country’s smallest park measuring up to only 33.7sq.km but protects more than mountain gorillas. Other faunal species include golden monkeys, buffaloes, elephants, bush pigs, and birds such as paradise flycatchers, blue-headed coucal, speckled mouse bird, pin-tailed whydah, black kite, fire finch stonechat, double –collared sun bird, archer’s robin chat, Kivu ground thrush to mention but a few.
Gorilla tours in Uganda can be enjoyed at any time of the year but the most favorite period is the dry season. Each year, Uganda gorilla parks record 2 phases of dry season that is the short and long dry spell. The important dry months of the year to consider when planning a successful gorilla safari are June, July, August, September, December, January and February. The fact that there is high demand for this adventure, we recommend that you make booking early enough and avoid last minute rush.
