LAKE KIVU
Lake Kivu is Rwanda’s biggest Lake and is surrounded by scenic mountains. Lake Kivu is lying in the western end of Rwanda and is also a shared lake with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This charming lake extends from the North at the Virunga Mountain ranges to the Southern side of Nyungwe Forest National Park. Its strategic location between Congo and Rwanda forms the biggest border area for the two East-Central African states. Lake Kivu is lying along the Albertine Rift which is the western arm of the East African Rift Valley. Lake Kivu pours its water into the scenic Ruzizi River which flows southwards to Lake Tanganyika. Its surface area extends up to 2700 sq. km and is ranked the 6th largest lake on the African continent.

Lake Kivu is surrounded by cities including Kibuye (Karongi), Gisenyi (Rubavu), and Cyangugu (Rusizi).
Cyangugu/Rusizi town
Rusizi/Cyangugu is located in the southern end of Lake Kivu. It is strategically lying overviewing Bukavu town on the Democratic Republic of Congo side. Cyangugu is accessible about 30 to 40 minutes’ drive from Nyungwe National Park. Cyangugu is also an ideal location to stay when on a chimpanzee tracking tour in Nyungwe Forest National Park. Kibuye (Karongi)
Kibuye is a beautiful town located midway between the North and South of Lake Kivu. It is a vibrant town like Gisenyi and is a perfect place to explore the scenic Lake Kivu. Birding or bird-watching
Lake Kivu is a special birding spot in Rwanda. The lake provides refuge to multiple bird species worth spotting on bird-watching tours. The birds to expect to identify here include the white-breasted cormorants, pied kingfishers, ospreys, bronze sunbirds, crimson-rumped waxbill, common waxbill, black crake, ross’s turacos, double-toothed barbet, African marsh harrier, common sandpipers, red-chested sunbird, and gray-capped warblers.
Other birds to find on a birding tour at Lake Kivu include yellow-bellied waxbills, spot-flanked barbet, brown-throated wattle-eye, olive sunbird, Baglafetch weaver, pelicans, black sawing, olive-bellied sunbird, African stonechat, pied crow, rameron pigeon, and more.
Boat ride
A boat ride/cruise is one of the interesting things to do in Lake Kivu. On a boat ride, expect to explore some of the birds, and the islands like the Amahoro and Napoleon Island. The different sessions to consider for boat rides or cruises include morning and afternoon/evening. Each session comes with remarkable views including the sunrise and sunset.

Getting there
Lake Kivu is accessible from the heart of Lake Kivu about 3 hours drive. A 4x4 safari vehicle is most suitable for your road trip from Kigali to Lake Kivu. Lake Kivu is accessible from any of the 3 cities (Kibuye, Cyangugu, and Gisenyi). By air, you can take a flight from Kigali to Gisenyi airport. From Gisenyi, you can connect to Lake Kivu for your leisure activities.
When to visit
Lake Kivu is accessible all year round. However, the best time months to explore Lake Kivu are June, July, August, and December, January, to February. During sunny days, temperatures range from 15 to 27 degrees Celsius.
