W hat is the acceptable age limit for gorilla trekking? 15 years and above is the acceptable minimum age limit for gorilla trekking in Uganda, Rwanda, and Congo. The minimum age limit is the standard age applying to all gorilla trekking destinations and is enforced on all actual gorilla treks. The set age limit for gorilla trekking must be respected by all visitors on the gorilla tour. However, there are some instances where a child below 15 years may track gorillas but this doesn’t apply to all destinations and first, you must inquire from your local tour expert if there is room for that. During the process of obtaining a valid gorilla permit in Uganda, Rwanda, or Congo, a visitor must submit a copy of their passport, and is so doing, the authorities can obtain their details. When issuing a valid gorilla permit to visitors, only those above 15 years stand a chance to get a permit. On the actual day of visiting gorillas, the park authorities will require every visitor to present their original passport as part of the verification exercise. This means the copy of the passport you submit when reserving a permit through your tour operator on the ground must correspond to the original copy. The minimum age limit for gorilla trekking is set and agreed by park authorities. The different government park authorities in charge of park management like Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), an organ that manages all the ten National Parks in Uganda. In Rwanda, the organ in charge is the Rwanda Development Board (RDB). Why is the age limit for gorilla trekking set at 15? The minimum age limit for gorilla trekking/tracking is 15 due to some reasons. First, anyone below 15 years is categorized as a child and is believed that he or she can’t manage the negative reaction displayed by gorillas. Mountain gorillas or eastern lowland gorillas are generally calm and gentile species, but at times, they tend to be aggressive more so when they are threatened or when they misinterpret certain actions of trekkers/trackers in their habitat. When such an incidence happens, children are likely to feel frightened and won’t stay calm/lay low more so when the massive silverback gorilla approaches them. In the end, a child/children can start crying or screaming which further can provoke an irritated gorilla. Above 15 years, it is believed that such a person can withstand reactions from gorillas in the wild. Even when gorillas have charged, they won’t feel frightened or scared. They can easily observe the park ranger's instructions like staying calm, bowing down, not running, etc. Adults/mature trekkers are less likely to get carried away in the wild when tracking gorillas. They can easily keep in mind the rest of the gorilla trekking regulations briefed to them by the park official including keeping a distance of 7-8 meters away from gorillas. Children are often not mentally prepared for emotional adventures like gorilla trekking. When an adult decides to go to trek gorillas, they know what they are going for or what they are likely to encounter. Usually, children join their parents as a way to give them company. They may not be moved by the vacation as their parents. A complete gorilla trek also requires some fitness level and determination which often lucks among children. It takes some time to track and finally, you come across the mountain gorilla family. Most young children aren’t physically fit to go through the round gorilla trekking session that takes about 2-6 hours. Gorilla trekking generally requires active participation and involving children can slow down the entire process. Where gorilla treks are done, gorillas are accessed in the high elevation. Getting deep into the jungle and steep slopes at times navigating via muddy or slippery ground can pose huge challenges to children.
