Gorilla trekking for seniors, elderly and the disabled in Uganda: There is only a minimum age for gorilla trekking, and that is 15. Tracking mountain gorillas in Uganda, Rwanda or Congo doesn’t have a maximum age, it is an adventure for everyone. An encounter with the massive mountain gorilla family in the wild is a dream come true to all nature lovers or primate enthusiasts.
By nature, gorilla trekking is strenuous and it requires some level of physical wellness in you. Because of this, most seniors, elderly and the disable feel left out, then they opt for game drives, cruise holidays or relaxation tours in islands. But what is interesting is that even persons of 70s, 80’s, can successfully visit gorillas in the African jungles. There are many available options to help the elderly reach deep into the jungles to see a family of mountain gorillas in Uganda, Rwanda & Congo.
Before you visit Uganda or Rwanda for actual visit to see mountain gorillas, you already know your level of physical fitness. Hiking through the dense vegetation with steep slopes and with heavy luggage can be challenging when you aren’t fit enough. There is no guarantee that you will find a gorilla family stationed in one position. These apes roam from one point to the other and finding them requires good time to navigate through the forest and steep slopes. You can talk to the tour operator (Mist Rwanda Safaris) in advance such that he can communicate to the park official to assign the easier to find families.
If you are visiting Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for gorilla trekking, the easier-track groups include Habinyanja, Mubare groups in Buhoma sector. At Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, you can opt for Kwitonda and Sabyinyo gorilla family groups.
Not all accommodation types at gorilla trekking destination favor elderly, persons with disability. This is why when choosing where to spend a night, you must pay keen attention on which accommodation is ideal for you if you are 70 or 80 years. There are different lodging options allover Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Volcanoes National Park.
Driving for 8-9 hours from Kampala to Bwindi or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park for gorilla tracking can be stressing for the elderly or the disabled. The only available option to cut the long hours is taking flight from Entebbe Airport to Kihihi/Kisoro airstrip then connect to your preferred gorilla trekking destination.
Gorilla trekking in Uganda or Rwanda is an all-year-round adventure whether you are elderly or able-bodied. But the most favorable time is the dry season or dry months of the year and these occur twice a year; the first phase from June, July, August to early September and December to February – these are usually categorized as the short dry months of the year.
