The essential requirements for gorilla trekking in Uganda include a valid gorilla permit. Only persons of 15 years and above are eligible to go track mountain gorillas in either Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda.
Each of the valid gorilla trekking permits in Uganda is issued at USD700 if you are a FNR (Foreign Non-Resident), USD600 FR (Foreign Resident) and East Africa citizens on gorilla safaris pay UGX250,000. Once you have secured your gorilla permit in Uganda, next is to observe the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Essentially, a face mask is a must to wear at all times and an N95 or surgical mask is the best. At the National Parks, body temperature screening is conducted and visitors with body temperature below 37.5 stand a chance to go trek mountain gorillas.
In case you happen to wear disposal face masks, you are advised to have at least 2 more to help you change. While on actual gorilla trekking adventure, social distancing must be observed at all times and don’t forget to sanitize.
If a visitor tests positive for corona virus upon arrival at Entebbe Airport/Uganda, he or she shall be advised to self-isolate at the designated centres at a cost. The recommended quarantine is 14 days but these are rare incidences. Where a foreign national tests positive and he or she wants to be repatriated to another state for treatment, it is allowed but at visitors cost.
There are many laboratories that have been recommended by the Ministry of Health in Uganda to conduct corona virus tests. Your tour operator on the ground will advise you appropriately on which is easy to reach so that you save time. But the known one include Lancet Laboratories, Test and Fly, ANCA Biotech Laboratories etc. Visitors can receive their test results by mail and this reduces any inconveniences like traveling back to the lab to pick results. What is important is to carry out your test from the recommended laboratories as per the Ministry of Health’s directives.
Yes, gorilla trekking in Uganda starting from Rwanda is possible but first, you need to be certain if the land border of Uganda and Rwanda is open. With many countries still battling corona virus/COVID-19 pandemic, anything can happen and before you know it, a country can impose travel restrictions on its borders. This is why flying to Uganda and start your gorilla journey from Entebbe or Kampala to avoid uncertainties on last minute.
From Entebbe or Kampala to Bwindi or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, you drive for 8-9 hours.
