When you talk about primate experiences in Africa, there are a few places to consider and Nyungwe Forest National Park is with no doubt one of them. Located in far Southwestern Rwanda, Nyungwe National Park is a rich tropical forest park with the world’s most sought-after primates, birdlife and floral species. With its ecological richness, a visit to Nyungwe Forest NP on a Rwanda safari guarantees you unforgettable encounters in the wild.
Nyungwe Forest National Park is found in the Southern Province of Rwanda, and is bordered by Kibira National Park of Burundi to the South and to the West; there is D.R. Congo and a scenic Lake Kivu. This is a natural rainforest, one of the very few well-preserved montane forests on the African continent. It is situated in the watershed between the basin of the Congo River to the West, and the Nile River to the East. The Eastern edge is where one of the Nile Source arms is found.
Nyungwe Forest was created as a park in 2004 and extends up to 970sq.km, making it Rwanda’s biggest natural rainforest-dominated conservancy area. Besides the rainforest, the park features bogs, swamps, grassland and bamboo forest. The park is accessible 54km from Cyangugu town from the West. Inside the park borders, there is Mt. Bigugu (2921m) and as of 2020, the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) officially entered into an agreement with African Parks to assume the management role of Nyungwe NP. Before upgrading to park status, Nyungwe was a designated forest reserve since 1933.
The vast 970sq.km Nyungwe Forest Park contains over 75 mammal species including small and large, plus nocturnal species. The park’s primates: 400 colobus monkeys, 500 chimpanzees, L’hoest monkeys, Vervet monkeys, Angolan colobus monkeys, Dent’s Mona monkeys, Owl-faced monkeys, Red-tailed monkeys, Olive baboons, Blue monkeys, Vervet monkeys, and Golden monkeys.
An estimated population of about 310 species of birds calls Nyungwe NP their home. The large population of birds in this park comprise the Albertine rift endemic species and countless forest bird species. They include White-tailed blue flycatchers, Chestnut owlet, White-headed wood-hoopoe, Stripe-breasted tit, Purple-breasted sunbirds, Archer’s robin chat, Rwenzori turacos, Collared Apalis, Neumann’s short-tailed warblers, Archer’s robin chat, Handsome francolins, Doherty’s bush-shrike, Elliot’s woodpeckers, Rwenzori batis, Regal sunbird, Chapin’s flycatcher, Black-faced flycatchers,
Kivu ground thrush, Red-collared babblers, Albertine owlets, Rockefeller’s sunbird, Congo-bay owlet, Blue-spotted wood-dove, Dusky crimson wing, Paradise flycatcher, Black saw-wing, Grauer’s swamp warblers, Kungwe apalis, Bar-tailed trogon, Strange weaver bird, Shelley’s crimson wing, and others.
Two areas to explore on a guided chimpanzee trek in Nyungwe include Uwinka and Cyamudongo section. Visits are made to already habituated chimpanzee community and over 500 chimps live within this park alone. Unlike other destinations, trekking to see chimpanzees in Nyungwe Forest NP requires some fitness level considering the elevation range. Briefing starts early and visitors are expected to be ready by 5:00 a.m. The official in charge of tourism will conduct the briefing and allocate park guides to take visitors on a search for chimpanzees.
Lying at an altitude of 1600-2950m, Nyungwe contains a significant bird species including forest and Albertine rift endemic species. The bird species to search for during the birding expedition in Nyungwe Forest include the red-throated lathe, Handsome francolins, Red-faced woodland warblers, Rwenzori nightjars, Neumann’s warblers, Rwenzori turacos, Yellow-eyed black flycatchers, Rockefeller’s sunbird, Purple-breasted sunbird, Mountain masked apalis, Kivu ground thrush, Strange weaver birds, Stripe breasted tit, and others.
Nyungwe Forest NP features a unique landscape and has a good network of hiking/walking trails. The trails vary in length and each has what to offer nature lovers from bird sightings to primate encounters. Here are some of the amazing nature walking trails to explore on the Nyungwe Forest NP safari. They include the Congo-Nile divide and trail 227km walking trail which requires a good number of days to complete exploring. Igishigishigi trail is a 2km trail offering incredible views of the lush Nyungwe Forest canopy while you spot some interesting monkeys and birds. Imbaraga trail 10km, Umugote trail, Karamba trail, Umoyove, Irebero, Bigugu, Imbaraga, Isumo, Ngabwe, Muzimu, Kamiranzovu, and Rukuzi trail.
The canopy walk is one experience that shouldn’t miss out on your bucket-list on the Rwanda tour in Nyungwe. This is the only East African park where you can embark on a canopy walk that starts from the Igishigishigi trail and lasts for 2 hours. The walkway is set 60m from the ground and extends 200m.
A tour in Nyungwe Forest NP offers more than just primate encounters. An addition of cultural or community visits is a great chance to explore different cultures, and traditions of the rich Rwandan people. You can also visit the Gisakura tea estates to explore how tea is grown, and processed till the final product is ready to be put on the market.
Visitors are free to visit the park at any time of the year, but for excellent primate encounters, we recommend the dry months of the year. The dry months to perfectly enjoy your trip in Nyungwe Forest NP; June to September, and December, to February.
