In Rwanda, the organ in charge is the Rwanda Development Board (RDB).
Why is the age limit for gorilla trekking set at 15?
The minimum age limit for gorilla trekking/tracking is 15 due to some reasons. First, anyone below 15 years is categorized as a child and is believed that he or she can’t manage the negative reaction displayed by gorillas. Mountain gorillas or eastern lowland gorillas are generally calm and gentile species, but at times, they tend to be aggressive more so when they are threatened or when they misinterpret certain actions of trekkers/trackers in their habitat. When such an incidence happens, children are likely to feel frightened and won’t stay calm/lay low more so when the massive silverback gorilla approaches them. In the end, a child/children can start crying or screaming which further can provoke an irritated gorilla.
Above 15 years, it is believed that such a person can withstand reactions from gorillas in the wild. Even when gorillas have charged, they won’t feel frightened or scared. They can easily observe the park ranger's instructions like staying calm, bowing down, not running, etc. Adults/mature trekkers are less likely to get carried away in the wild when tracking gorillas. They can easily keep in mind the rest of the gorilla trekking regulations briefed to them by the park official including keeping a distance of 7-8 meters away from gorillas.
Children are often not mentally prepared for emotional adventures like gorilla trekking. When an adult decides to go to trek gorillas, they know what they are going for or what they are likely to encounter. Usually, children join their parents as a way to give them company. They may not be moved by the vacation as their parents.
A complete gorilla trek also requires some fitness level and determination which often lucks among children. It takes some time to track and finally, you come across the mountain gorilla family. Most young children aren’t physically fit to go through the round gorilla trekking session that takes about 2-6 hours.
Gorilla trekking generally requires active participation and involving children can slow down the entire process. Where gorilla treks are done, gorillas are accessed in the high elevation. Getting deep into the jungle and steep slopes at times navigating via muddy or slippery ground can pose huge challenges to children.
Children are also likely to be infected with most communicable diseases like flu and cough. This poses a risk to mountain gorillas to contract such diseases that can affect their health. It should be noted that mountain gorillas share up to 98% of their DNA with humans making them very susceptible to infectious diseases.
When does a child below 15 years track gorillas?
Often, parents may want to get along with their children on a gorilla trekking tour. But they may not meet the age limit for gorilla trekking and end up being excluded. The instances where a child below 15 can be allowed may depend on the respective park authority. UWA for instance may accept those children who are nearing their 15th birthday to engage in a gorilla trek. But first, the parents must provide proof that the children are fit enough and perhaps left with a week to their 15th birthday.
What can be done if the child is too young for gorilla trekking?
When a child is too young and by the standards of gorilla trekking, he or she can’t be allowed to engage in a trek to see gorillas, there are multiple activities for him/her to get involved. They include visiting local schools, cultural/community visits, and nature walks.
